What Does Our Lift Passenger Release Training Course Cover?

Our comprehensive training course is structured in accordance with BS7255:2023 – Safe Working on Lifts and is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience for safe passenger release.

Course Overview:

The session is grounded in the standards set out by BS7255:2023.
Typical course duration is approximately 4 hours, depending on the type of lift systems in use and the number of participants.
The training includes a theory module covering lift mechanics and key safety principles.
This is followed by a practical, hands-on session, where all delegates actively participate in passenger release procedures.
Access to the lift machinery and all relevant keys (including the machine room) is required to demonstrate the process effectively.
The course is suitable for groups of up to 8 delegates per session.
Upon completion, delegates are granted access to our exclusive online resource hub where training manuals and video tutorials are available.

Lift Passenger Release Training: Legal and Industry Guidance

Understanding the legal and industry guidance around passenger release is critical for lift owners and duty holders. Under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) and BS EN 13015:2001 +A1:2008, lift owner/operators are legally required to have appropriate arrangements in place to ensure the safe release of trapped passengers.

LOLER Regulation 5(1)(d) mandates that persons trapped in a lift must not be exposed to danger and must be freed safely. The Approved Code of Practice supports this by stating that a reliable means of rescue must be in place to minimise risk to trapped individuals.

The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) reinforces this obligation with the following key points:

Passenger entrapment is rarely an emergency and should be treated as a controlled situation.
Only trained and competent individuals must carry out release procedures.
Under no circumstances should untrained personnel attempt to release passengers.
Trained staff must only work on lifts for which they have received specific instruction.
If a trained person is unsure or forgets the procedure, they must not proceed and should notify their employer for further support or training.
If the required equipment fails, all actions must cease, and the lift company should be contacted immediately.

HSE (Health and Safety Executive) references BS7255:2023 – Safe Working on Lifts as the current best practice for safe release procedures. Clause 4 outlines the responsibilities of lift owners, including ensuring only trained and authorised individuals carry out passenger release and that their competence is reassessed regularly—ideally on an annual basis.

Following this guidance not only ensures compliance but prioritises the safety and wellbeing of both building users and those undertaking lift operations.
